A high-speed pursuit on Saturday afternoon led to a tense standoff between a 31-year-old man and police from both Fort Worth and Arlington, Texas. The incident culminated in the suspect’s arrest after he attempted to carjack a vehicle and burglarized a residence.
The drama began when Daniel Ortiz, driving a silver BMW SUV erratically on eastbound Interstate 30 and Eastchase Parkway, caught the attention of Fort Worth police officers. As officers attempted to pull him over, Ortiz recklessly collided with two vehicles, forcing officers to initiate a brief chase. However, due to heavy traffic congestion, the pursuit was terminated after just two minutes.
Undeterred, Fort Worth police located Ortiz’s abandoned vehicle near a home on Fielder Road close to I-30. Establishing a perimeter, they searched for the suspect within the residence. Simultaneously, Arlington police received a report of a carjacking attempt on the other side of the interstate.
This critical tip steered officers towards Ortiz, who was discovered in the process of burglarizing a home on the 1700 block of Northwood Court. Though the homeowner was absent, security cameras within the residence alerted them to the intruder’s presence.
With the situation escalating, police swiftly called in a SWAT team. The prompt intervention of the SWAT unit ultimately led to Ortiz’s apprehension.
Facing a multitude of charges, Ortiz is now in custody. Fort Worth police have charged him with evading arrest and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. In addition, Arlington police have filed charges of burglary of a habitation and aggravated assault against him.
